Release schedule, in season

Collected every Monday, October through March. The reported price is the dealer price as of 7:00 a.m. local time on Monday, and stays pinned to that Monday even when collection slips a day or two.
Published about 1:00 p.m. ET on the Wednesday after collection. Not Monday: Monday is the reference day, not the release day.
Holiday shift: if a government holiday falls on or before that Wednesday, the release moves to Thursday or Friday, still reporting Monday prices.

Off-season pause

The weekly survey stops after the last March Monday. EIA's published method keeps a monthly collection going on the second Monday of each month from April to September, for use in the following heating season. No off-season residential heating oil reading was published for 2026 though: EIA's own series page shows a reading for the week of 30 March 2026 and then nothing until the week of 5 October 2026 (published 7 October), so this summer the retail series really was dark for 27 weeks. That is how you get "heating oil prices" headlines in August citing data five months old, and it is why the stamp at the top of every page here names the reading week rather than today.EIA
